Ashes to Ashes

About a month ago, one of my favourite places on the planet—Jasper National Park—had a devastating wildfire. In addition to vast swaths of pristine parkland being burned, the Jasper townsite lost about 30% of it's structures, as did numerous outlying accommodations. For about a week, my heart broke over and over again as the fire spread farther and farther through areas I have walked through, hiked through, cycled through. Places I love.

The heartbreak was even more acute as my family had spread my father's ashes there just over two months prior,. Many of the places we put him were affected. At first this added another boulder to the weight of my sadness, but as the shock and horror wore off, I now like that part of him gets to help regrow the forest. While I'm truly glad he didn't have to see Jasper burn, I'm also pleased he gets to help bring it back to its former glory.

The residents of Jasper are finally being allowed to go home, after weeks away following an evacuation with just a few hours notice. Luckily all major services buildings like the schools, hospital, and more were saved. No humans lost their lives in the fire, though we may never know what the loss of animal life was. Jasper will rebuild, though it may not look like "my Jasper" again in my lifetime.
